Baking

Wander through the bakery section in a supermarket or take a look in the cabinets of a suburban bakery and you will see the results of a professional baker's daily work.

By the time most people rise in the morning many bakers will be well into their working day producing the fresh bread, cakes, biscuits and pastries to tempt us during the day.

Baking is very much a 'hands-on' career choice which offers lots of opportunity to be creative and productive. While accuracy with interpretation of recipes and weighing and measuring ingredients is important for consistency, the most successful bakers use their own creative flair and skill to make their products stand out from the rest.

The Career Baker programme offers an opportunity to develop the range of skills required to be successful within the baking industry. Past students and graduates of the programme are employed in a range of bakery positions and a number own their own bakery businesses.

Ara offers comprehensive training in a well-equipped bakery based on individual and team working environments. In addition, you will gain an insight into the realities of running a bakery by assisting in the operation of a class bakery through our Pantry on Campus Café.

During your study you will develop a range of baking skills and knowledge including;

  • bakery products and ingredients
  • recipe interpretation and calculations
  • safe operation of baking machinery equipment
  • preparation and baking techniques
  • finishing and decorating techniques
  • baking science and technology.

Our staff are well experienced and respected in the baking industry. Holding a number of positions on bakery related professional organisations, the staff also maintain regular contact with all aspects of the industry to up-skill their craft skills and knowledge to keep up with current industry trends.

Ara bakery tutors work collaboratively with other industry training providers to share knowledge and resources.
