Beginners Te Reo Maori - Te Kaupae 2
Start your te reo journey of discovery.
If you have a personal or professional interest in te reo Māori and would like to contribute positively to the development the Māori language this is the start you need.
You’ll develop the language skills to communicate, with little support, in familiar everyday contexts and in some Māori environments. You’ll learn and practice aspects of hui whakatau (gatherings), mihimihi (acknowledgments and introductions), and discuss traditional narratives.
This course provides a pathway to contribute to community and cultural roles, such as:
- preparing a whare and/or marae for hui, kaiwaiata, and working in the marae kitchen and dining room
- speaking te reo in homes within whānau and communities
- role-modelling the use of te reo among whānau and hapū in a range of settings
These skills and opportunities are embedded in the teaching approach where engagement with local marae and culturally immersive experiences are at the forefront. Course delivery combines in-classroom and local marae-based experiences. The inclusion of marae provides an authentic, meaningful engagement with local Māori communities, ensuring that mana whenua are known people and retain the role of representing themselves.
Please note: places are limited on this course and funding may be exhausted throughout the year. We’re experiencing high volumes of demand for foundation education, and we’ll do our best to support and transition learners where possible.
