Media, filming and photography

Find out how Ara supports media enquiries, campus access and sharing the stories of our ākonga and kaimahi.

Ara Institute of Canterbury welcomes media interest in our ākonga (students), kaimahi (staff), programmes and facilities. We’re proud of the stories we have to tell, and we’re here to help you tell them well.

You can explore our latest stories on our news page, where we share achievements, insights and impact of our ākonga, kaimahi and partners.

If you’d like to receive media releases and updates from Ara, you can join our mailing list - email Communications@Ara.ac.nz to be added.

Lana Hart, Senior Internal Communications Lead

The Communications team is your first point of contact for:

  • media enquiries and interview requests
  • requests for comment on Ara activity, programmes or organisational matters
  • connecting you with appropriate spokespeople, where available
  • permission to film or photograph on Ara campuses or in Ara facilities.
  • We understand media deadlines and will work with you to provide timely, accurate information.

All media access to Ara campuses or facilities must be approved in advance by the Communications team.

This includes any filming, photography or interviews involving ākonga, kaimahi or visitors.

This process helps us uphold:

  • the privacy of our ākonga and kaimahi
  • cultural safety and tikanga
  • the integrity of teaching and learning environments
  • health and safety requirements.

Permission from an individual kaimahi is not sufficient. All requests must be approved and coordinated by the Communications team.

Requests involving filming or photography on Ara campuses must be made in advance.

The Communications team will work with you to:

  • confirm whether your request can be accommodated
  • coordinate suitable locations and timing
  • ensure appropriate permissions and releases are in place
  • arrange an escort where required.

We aim to support media and content creators wherever possible, while minimising disruption to learning and campus life.
