Certificate in Construction Trade Skills – Carpentry
Learn in-demand carpentry skills and gain experience on real construction projects
This programme will equip you with a wide range of practical skills as well as an understanding of carpentry theory, calculations, quantities, drawing, communication skills and related studies. You'll also learn about tools, machines and timber, plus the construction of single and two storey residential buildings and light commercial buildings.
In order to undertake this programme you must be physically able to work safely in an industry-related work environment.
Please note: the fees for this programme will increase for enrolments starting in Semester 1, 2025. Students starting this programme in Semester 2, 2024 won’t be affected by the fee increase, even though the programme continues into 2025.

What if English is not my first Language?
If English is not your first language, we want to make sure that you will be successful in your chosen programme of study.
- Please provide a result from a test or qualification on the acceptable alternatives English Proficiency Outcomes Chart.
- If you are a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident, complete an Admission and Enrolment form and Ara will contact you regarding a free assessment.
- If you are not a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent resident, book an IELTS or other test through the Ara Examination Centre or in your home country.
- IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form and are valid for two years from the date of the test.
- What if I have achieved NCEA Level 3 University Entrance?
- You do not need to provide additional evidence of English Language skills.

Applications will be processed in the order that they are received. In the event that there are more Applications than spaces available on the programme, a waitlist will be maintained.

Many qualified carpenters choose to work as a leading hand, a foreman, a construction manager, a project manager within a company structure as well as work as a sole trader and/or contractor.
Study pathways
This programme can lead to the New Zealand Certificate in Carpentry Level 4 apprenticeship.
