Gain all the fundamental skills needed to begin a career in plumbing, gasfitting or drainlaying.

You will learn the process of assembling, installing and repairing pipes; how to use plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying drawings and fabricate basic components. With relevant work experience you will also apply health and safety requirements to plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying contexts and experience using appropriate safety equipment.

In order to undertake this programme you must be physically able to work safely in an industry-related work environment.

What if English is not my first Language?

If English is not your first language, we want to make sure that you will be successful in your chosen programme of study.

  • Please provide a result from a test or qualification on the acceptable alternatives English Proficiency Outcomes Chart.
  • If you are a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident, complete an Admission and Enrolment form and Ara will contact you regarding a free assessment.
  • If you are not a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent resident, book an IELTS or other test through the Ara Examination Centre or in your home country.
  • IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form and are valid for two years from the date of the test.
  • What if I have achieved NCEA Level 3 University Entrance?
  • You do not need to provide additional evidence of English Language skills.

When there are more candidates than places available in the programme, selection will be made on the basis of the following criteria:

  • whether candidates have completed three years of secondary education; and
  • candidates’ academic achievement in NCEA Level 1 and/or NCEA Level 2, or Year 11 and/or Year 12 English and Mathematics

Career opportunities

Completion of this module will put you in a strong position when applying for an apprenticeship in a plumbing, gasfitting or drainlaying company and for working towards a New Zealand Certificate qualification and registration.

Employment opportunities are strong in the Plumbing, Gasfitting and Drainlaying industries in Christchurch with the rebuild and it is hoped that a student completing this course will take up the opportunity to gain an apprenticeship.

This programme is a study pathway towards the New Zealand Certificate in Plumbing Level 4 and New Zealand Certificate in Gasfitting Level 4.
